About three weeks ago, the Ajyal team met 100 cyclists in Ghent, Belgium for the Cycling4Gaza event, Cycling4Justice, in support of Ajyal's work with children in Gaza. The cycle raised funds and awareness about the devastating impact of Israel's ongoing onslaught on Gaza on children's mental health. It brought attention to the role of the international community, us as individuals, in calling for international accountability and justice for Gaza. We call on everyone in our community to continue to engage in peaceful actions to demand the immediate and unrestricted flow of aid, as required by international law and basic morality, and a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
Ajyal Foundation for Education is an Oxford-based organisation that develops and delivers high-quality, research led education for disadvantaged communities with a particular focus on Palestinian and refugee communities.
Ajyal supports education that is informed by, sensitive and responsive to the impact of war, displacement and violence on children’s wellbeing and education. Ajyal was the first organisation to offer psychosocial support for displaced children in Gaza during this onslaught and has supported tens of thousands of children since October 2023.
Currently the majority of the Foundation’s work is focused on supporting the welfare of displaced children in Gaza through the provision of urgent essentials, including food, as well as psychosocial support.
We are delighted to announce that C4G2024 Cycling4Justice Campaign in partnership with Ajyal Foundation is proudly sponsored by Bayt.com, the Middle East's leading job site, as a gold sponsor, highlighting their commitment to supporting meaningful causes in the communities they serve.
Among Ajyal's post-war interventions, the project supported by this year's cycle is Safe Spaces for Psychological First-Aid and Psychosocial Support. The project aims to provide mental health support to displaced children in Gaza, focusing on addressing the profound psychological impact of war-related trauma. We aim to support thousands of children across 12 sheltering centres in Gaza, along with thousands of parents and primary caregivers. The project will offer psychological first-aid (PFA) and psychosocial support sessions (PSS) to children, and emotional debriefing sessions and psycho-education workshops for parents and guardians. The project will also train hundreds of community providers (teachers, mental health practitioners, university graduates, youth workers) on trauma-informed care, social-emotional learning skills, and structured psychosocial support in emergency contexts. The project will establish referral pathways for children who require more long-term psychological support.
Even before this tragic war, Gaza was described by Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General, as 'hell on earth’ for children. With an alarming rate of more than 90% suffering from PSTD, children described their daily lives as a constant state of ‘fear, worry, sadness and grief.’ Children were exhibiting emotional distress behaviour, with 79% experiencing bedwetting, 59% exhibiting reactive mutism and 90% of children with high levels of emotional distress when separated from their parents. This war has severely affected the wellbeing and mental health of children beyond measure and the data quoted here no longer reflect the reality in Gaza – the situation for children is far worse.
